Cold Weather Tips for EVs
When the temperature drops below 40⁰F , it becomes harder for your vehicle’s battery to store energy. Whether you drive a plug-in hybrid or full-electric vehicle, cold weather will have an effect on your battery range and capacity. Follow these tips to get the most out of your Ford ProTM EV all season long.
Before You Leave: Preconditioning
Preconditioning uses power from a charging station to warm (or cool) your vehicle’s cabin and battery before you hit the road. When you precondition your EV, your vehicle can deliver the best possible mileage on a full charge. Simply use your vehicle’s touchscreen or Ford Pro Telematics app to schedule your departure time, and your vehicle will begin preconditioning about 45 minutes before you leave.
Pro tip: Use seat warmers and the heated steering wheel (if equipped) instead of your vehicle’s HVAC to stay warm after preconditioning. Warmers draw less energy from the battery. Avoid using MAX heat except in extreme conditions.
Driving
Being a safe driver benefits everyone, but it also has positive effects on your EV range. Accelerate and brake smoothly, avoid aggressive driving, and use cruise control to get the most from your battery.
Parking
Park in covered areas to minimize the need to defrost or de-ice your vehicle. If you’re parked outside, remove any snow or ice from the vehicle before driving. Snow and ice adds to the weight of your vehicle, which will reduce your range.
