How Information From Telematics Assisted With a Fleet’s Recovery of Stolen Assets

Mar 22, 2024 | 2 min read

The beauty of connected fleet technology lies in its ability to link people, processes, and assets. These connections enable commercial fleet businesses to optimize operations, achieve greater visibility, and minimize business disruption. But what does that look like in action? When end-to-end energy solutions provider Motive Companies had an upfitted Ford vehicle stolen from its fleet, Ford ProTM was able to assist in using the Ford Pro Telematics867 live GPS feature to help recover the missing assets, which represented more than $200,000 in value.

Leaders at Motive were so impressed that they implemented Ford Pro integrated solutions, including Ford Pro Telematics867 and Ford Pro Fleet Management software, across the entire fleet.

Tamper-Proof Protection

When Motive’s upfitted fleet vehicle was stolen, the company first tried to track it using a third-party GPS system that was installed in the vehicle—only to discover that the thieves were able to disable it. Not ready to consider the vehicle and equipment a lost cause, Motive turned to its longtime Ford Dealer to see whether there was anything Ford Pro could do to help. After hearing Motive’s story, the dealership contacted Dwight Delgado, Ford Pro Solutions Sales Manager (SSM) at Ford Pro Intelligence, who jumped into action by getting Motive’s permission to remotely activate Ford Pro Telematics.867

SSMs are part of a dedicated team of Ford Pro specialists who serve Ford Dealerships and customers—answering questions, providing customer support, and working with dealership teams to identify new opportunities. SSMs help commercial fleet businesses like Motive optimize their Ford Pro connected fleet solutions.

Connected vehicle technology like Ford Pro Telematics867 uses Ford vehicles’ embedded modems1167 (or plug-in devices on 2019 or older Ford models or non-Ford vehicles) to collect valuable data, such as odometer readings, warning indicator lights, and (most pertinent to this story) location. That data passes through the secure Ford Pro cloud to the Ford Pro Telematics867 dashboard for easy, centralized access. Modem activation is essential to accessing these telematics features and realizing their benefits, and because the modem is built into the vehicle1167, it’s tamper-proof, unlike the third-party GPS system.

After Ford ProTM Telematics GPS functionality helped locate the missing assets, Motive decided to implement Ford Pro integrated solutions, including Ford Pro Telematics, across the whole fleet.

Motive saw the value of Ford Pro Telematics867 when it helped prevent the potential loss of $200,000 in vehicle and equipment and minimized business disruption. With Ford Pro Telematics867 now activated across the whole fleet, Motive is able to leverage its many features to help reduce waste, keep tabs on the fleet, and maximize vehicle uptime.
